Are You a Candidate?

To be considered for bariatric surgery, you need to meet one of the following criteria:

• 100 lbs or more over ideal body weight or
• Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater or
• Have a BMI of 35 or greater with two or more obesity-related co-morbidities (complications) and failed non-surgical efforts at weight loss

Most candidates for bariatric surgery are between the ages of 18 and 65. People who have not yet tried traditional weight loss techniques are usually not candidates for bariatric surgery. Usually, you have to have tried and failed to lose weight using traditional methods.
