Life Changing Results
You asked me to send you a description of how Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery has changed my life. To be honest, it would be easier for me to list the few ways in which my life hasn't changed. I'll do my best, however, at giving you some specific examples.
Professionally: My confidence level has dramatically increased. Recently, this has resulted in a new career with significantly more responsibilities including greater public presentation opportunities. I am no longer reticent about getting out and meeting new people or presenting to large groups.
Medically: I no longer take any form of hypertension medications and I'm no longer considered pre-diabetic. Both my blood pressure and blood sugar are well within the normal range. I have even found that my body handles stress better. Three months ago I shattered my big toe (bypass does NOT cure clumsiness). I found that I healed very quickly and barely touched all of the pain medications that the doctors were trying to give me. I was even able to use crutches properly for the first time in my life.
Emotionally: I never considered myself an unhappy person, but I am happy almost all of the time now. My ability to bounce back from the everyday challenges that life brings has greatly improved and this wasn't ever even an issue pre-surgery.
Socially: I am much more confident. I have gone kayaking for the first time in my life and loved it. I am planning on getting back into scuba diving after more than 15 years and I'm even considering learning to ski. I'm more open to social opportunities and have even begun dating.
I love to travel more now. I can fit comfortably in an airplane seat and don't have to worry about infringing on the other passengers space or needing a seatbelt extender.
I also love to shop for clothes now. I have been able to fit into clothing in "normal" stores or pick up anything in a department store. And it all fits!
I never thought that my previous weight stopped me from living my life in any measurable way. I now realize that this new found energy and zest for life is opening all kinds of doors for me that I had never known to be closed.
I am happy to share my experiences with anyone that is interested in this procedure. I know that it is still up to me to maintain my behavioral changes to make the most of this opportunity long term. It's just great to finally see the results from doing the right things.
Gratefully,
Jennifer Grant
