Roux-en-Y Gastric BypassThe roux en y gastric bypass (RYGB) also produces weight
loss by limiting how much can be eaten by the creation of a small 1 ounce
stomach pouch; however, this is done by dividing the upper portion of the
stomach from the rest of the stomach. A segment of the proximal small intestine
is then connected directly to the small stomach pouch so that food empties
directly from the stomach pouch into the small intestine. Most of the
stomach and a segment of small intestine are bypassed by the food stream
creating less digestion and absorption of what is eaten. This combines with
the reduced food intake to produce weight loss. The larger bypassed stomach
maintains its blood supply, and although it no longer has food flowing
through it, the smell of food, the taste of food, and chewing and swallowing
food stimulate the stomach to continue to produce gastric juices that
eventually mix with the food stream in the small intestine.
