LAP-BAND® vs Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band procedures are the two most commonly performed weight loss surgeries performed at The Bariatric Center at Celebration Health. We have teamed up with the surgeons of US Bariatrics, who bring a combined experience of over 5000 gastric bypass and LAP-BAND surgeries.

LAP-BAND®
Adjustable Gastric Band Procedure
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)
Inflatable band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach Upper portion of the stomach is divided from the rest of the stomach
Band opening can be adjusted to restrict how much can be eaten Most of the stomach and a part of the small intestine are bypassed creating less digestion and absorption of what is eaten
Does not involve changing, cutting, stapling the stomach or intestines; generally safer Complex surgery involving multiple areas of the abdomen area
Gradual weight loss over time, achieving final weight at 2 years Average weight loss of greater than 60% of excess body weight at 5 years
Easily reversible Not reversible
Almost always performed laparoscopically Performed laparoscopically in most cases

You may find it difficult to decide which procedure is right for you. This can be a difficult decision, but we encourage you to attend one of our free informational sessions to learn more about Gastric Bypass and LAP-BAND® surgery.
